'Stonechat'
Along the beach by Minsmere RSPB, Suffolk are tank traps, large cast concrete cubes, remains from WWII, too solid to demolish. Practically every time I walk by them there is a stonechat sitting high on the gorse with its distinctive call, like two pebbles gently being knocked together. I was watching a wagtail near reed beds, flicking its long tail it settled on a depth measure post- his colouring and markings seemed a nice echo of the post. "Doves'
“Doves” is a print about two collared doves that 'live' in our garden. Every now and then the local cats try to catch them. The feathers fly, but so far the birds have always escaped. This is my salute to these great survivors!

'Choughs'
“Choughs” was made after my recent visit to the Isle of Islay, one of the few strongholds of these birds. Choughs belong to the crow family, and have very distinctive orange bills and legs. One day as we beat a retreat to the car in very heavy Scottish rain, this ‘chattering’ of choughs wheeled over our heads – a ready-made print!

A print made after a visit to RSPB Bempton Cliffs up on the North East coast, 'Bempton Gannets' recalls watching these large seabirds preparing their nests on the grassy slopes just inches from the cliff edge .f

'Brighton Starlings'
Most evenings in winter vast flocks of starlings converge on the remains of the pier at Brighton. They will roost overnight amongst the iron work, but beforehand wheel and flow across the sky as if one large creature. I watched them through icy squalls one evening - they were a print just waiting to be made.

'Wading Avocets'
Avocets are now firm residents year round in many parts of England, it can be easy to forget that not long ago they were rarities, attracting keen birders from far afield. I still get a thrill when I see them, in particular when they are wading, moving their long, upward curving bills from side to side. This print is being used by the RSPB to advertise a writing competition they are running in 2012.

'Barn Owl'
Anyone who has ever seen a barn owl hunting along field edges in the half light is unlikely to forget it. I am always struck by just how pale the bobbing bird is as it appears to float along.

Hares, unlike rabbits do not have burrows to shelter in. Instead they nestle in small indentations in the ground called 'forms'.

A shy bird, it is always a real treat to see a male bullfinch. This print was made after seeing one in a snowy landscape. The reflected light from the snow intensified the birds already vivid colours.

This print was inspired by watching common garden birds feeding in my garden in spring. Each bird waited their turn from a nearby hedge before landing on the feeder, grabbing a portion of seed and dashing back to eat.
